    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF CLF?

Founded almost 40 years ago, Sydney School being the global headquarters of Chan Family Choy Lee Fut is fortunate and privileged to be passing on the teachings learned by our instructors directly from the Keeper of our Style, Grand Master Chen Yong Fa (陳永發) [Cantonese: Chan Wing Faat]. Choy Lee Fut [蔡李佛] (Mandarin: Cài Lǐ Fó) is a complete system of Kung Fu, Qigong and Lion Dance. The Choy Lee Fut lineage is deeply rooted within the Shaolin Temple. It was founded by Chan Heung whose training included teachers from both the Northern Shaolin and Southern Shaolin traditions. Grand Master Chen, is the direct descendant of the founder of our style, Chan Heung (陳享) [Mandarin: Chén Xiǎng]. He is the fifth generation Jeung Mun Yan (Keeper of the Style). To date, Grand Master Chan Yong Fa continues to lead the Chan Family in Choy Lee Fut Kung Fu and Lohan Qigong internationally, and teaches its thousands of members worldwide. In addition to the rich history and comprehensive system that encompasses a wide range of disciplines, Choy Lee Fut Sydney is not just a club. We are proud to say that we offer a welcoming and inclusive training environment as well as a social aspect. By joining our school you become part of the Chan Family.

DO I NEED TO BE A PARTICULAR FITNESS LEVEL?

Although with any physical activity the fitter you are the easier it will be, our classes are designed to allow students to learn according to their abilities. Even if you don’t consider yourself fit, you will find your fitness will start to improve after just a few weeks of training. If you have any medical conditions/injuries, you can provide them in the comments field when registering or to the instructor before you start your first trial class; they may give you some extra pointers or customise some of the exercises for you.

DO I NEED PREVIOUS MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING?

Definitely not! The Choy Lee Fut approach to learning from absolute beginners to advanced does not require any previous martial arts training. Your best bet is to do the trial and see how the training feels.

HOW IS CHOY LEE FUT KUNG FU DIFFERENT TO OTHER STYLES?

Choy Lee Fut is a combination of the powerful hand techniques from Southern China mixed with the dynamic leg attacks of Northern China. It contains both external and internal aspects, as well as an extensive curriculum of fist forms, weapons and Shaolin wooden dummies. Finally, the style contains both punches and kicks as well as grappling and takedowns. Students get to learn all of these techniques by continuing their learning journey with Choy Lee Fut and advancing through the system.

    IS THERE CONTACT DURING CLASSES?

In Monday and Wednesday evening classes, students practice kicking and punching techniques and combinations in the air and on focus pads bags. We also do two person drills which are all controlled activities. The Friday night San Da classes have more contact including sparring, however this is always calibrated to each person’s level of experience. We recommend that beginner students join this class after a minimum of one month training of the Monday/Wednesday classes.
